Based in the Hunter region, NSW Australia, HMRI boasts more than 1100 researchers, research students and support staff employed by the University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Health and Calvary Mater Newcastle.
A word from HMRI Director Professor Michael Nilsson
HMRI offers the most advanced and cutting edge research facilities, and we have a stimulating environment to attract top researchers to live and work here. We have the expertise and facilities to build collaborations anywhere in the world.
As a research hub, HMRI provides a focal point for coordinating strategy, resources and funding. The hub model is now a benchmark being adopted throughout Australia.
Our research is organised around seven distinct research programs covering a broad cross-section of medical conditions:

- Information Based Medicine
- Pregnancy & Reproduction
- Public Health
- Viruses, Infection/Immunity, Vaccines & Asthma (VIVA).
Our research is powered by the many diverse and talented individuals working across all levels of the Institute. Along with our partners, the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health, HMRI actively seeks to host and establish productive relationships with researchers from across the globe – from PhD students on exchange programs, right through to Visiting Professorships.
