Governance
HMRI is a company limited by guarantee (ABN 27 081 436 919), and operates within a strong, self- imposed set of commercial and financial management principles.
HMRI ensures that research is conducted in accordance with the National Code of Conduct for Health and Medical Research.
HMRI is advised by a Board of Directors that has representation from the community, the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health.
An active HMRI Foundation supports the fundraising and marketing of HMRI, while the HMRI Research Council advises the HMRI Board in relation to research matters.

Tax Status
The Hunter Medical Research Institute (ABN: 27 081 436 919) is an Australian Public Company.
HMRI is a Health Promotion Charity and has been endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as a deductible gift recipient under Subdivision 30-BA of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Subdivision 30-B 1.1.5) as a public institution engaged solely in research into the causes, prevention or cure of disease in human beings, animals or plants.
HMRI also has a current Authority to Fundraise for Charitable Purposes (registration number CFN16214), issued by the Office of Charities in the NSW Department of Gaming and Racing.
